The newest fad it seems in the bazaar line of scams are these two. One is the ( Casino Random 0 1000 -- 400 you win 600 you win double 900 you win triple. What these mean is you have to roll EXACTLY 400 or 600 to win, not above it's all in the wording. No I don't play these but I've seen people get taken by them. It's not ok to scam money from people just because they aren't sharp. The second one is the "Plate Guantlet Mold" for 15k and the "Plate Boots Mold" for 38k both good deals IF they were Ornate. I asked one of the traders doing this about it and he said stupid people get what they deserve and he has made over 1 million pp so far selling 4 pp Plate molds for 40k. Now my question to him was this "" if I knock on your 75 year old Moms door ( who needs a new roof ) and tell her I will put on a brand new roof for only 10 thousand dollars and her being 75 years old and trusting AND needing a roof AND not having much money think wow this is just what I need. She pays me 10 thousand and I throw a few new shingles on her roof and disappear. Did she get what she deserved? He told me to blank off that it wasn't the same or some such but I think it's very much the same. Taking advantage of someone because they are stupid , or misinformed or for ANY reason is wrong, period. Anyways since this is the newbie forum and I consider everyone a newb about something at sometime in their EQ  life I figured it would be good to draw attention to these scams to help people avoid them.

Sadly, I doubt that the sort of people who fall for these things ever read the message boards... unless the servers are down, of course! :smileyvery-happy:

In real life the 75 year old lady or her family could sic the cops on ya. In EQ, however there is no BBB and no one to answer to as SOE says "all player trades are final". Your best defense is to know what you are buying.

Every time I start up a trader I hang around for about 10 minutes just listening to the scams out there.

I have to hand it to some though, some are quite creative like the afore mentioned lack of Ornate.

I do not agree with what they do (referring to the plate mold thing), but it is perfectly within the rules since SoE does not regulate item prices, and the buyer is the one who has to watch out for those things.

In a similar vein, there's a guy on Tunare who was trying to sell a Fungi...cept is was a regular ole fungi, not the one with fungal regrowth, for just under the price of a "real" fungi.

I agree completely. That's why I posted this, to maybe make people more aware that this is out there and to be careful before you buy.

Actually, I work for a government agency that monitors exactly these types of scams.  They happen far, far too often-even with legal action threatened.

The important thing to remember, in RL as well as EQ, is that if something sounds too good to be true......it almost certainly is.

Gotta be careful in the Bazaar.  I've seen far too many people who are more interested in getting every plat they can than they are being honest.

I've seen those scams before.  Personally I hate the "casinos" that are all over the Veeshan Bazaar.  These days I've gotten into the habit of not only reducing my clipping plane but stopping shouts before I go in the bazaar.

Those player run casinos are nothing but a way to make the casino operator richer.  Most times your chance of winning is really very small because of the different ways they set themselves up.

I'd rather keep my plat than throw it away.

And there you have it...  A little common sense will go a looooong way!

Of course that's not to say what the scammers are doing is OK in any way shape or form.  There's plenty of time's I've pulled an all-nighter and been too tired to have any common sense left myself.  Plus there are still new people coming into the game that may not know any better.

Just keep informing the would-be victims of these scams, and maybe the scammers will go away (we can hope, right?)

Great post!

My 1.8 cents worth....

Eek, that's a bit of a problem.  I buy stuff and mark it up all the time, but I never would have thought anyone would be so dense as to think a regular mold was the same as ornate.  Maybe he too has a point?  After all when people start shouting in zones that they want to sell off their account, or trade it for other characters, they hit my report list.  I keep thinking that they must be running scams, especially when I see them doing it repeatedly for days on end.

I really do hate those casinos, they cause more lag then there already is in the Bazaar and all those shouts of "Hey, this guy cheated!" and such are quite annoying.

Casinos are ah whole nother issue for me, legit or not legit. They don't belong in the already spam filled bazaar. SOE should turn off the random feature in the Bazaar and force the casinos into SH. They can still have em, just not in the bazaar.

As a matter of fact, there are those that would say "Just put them on Ignore" First off, ignore isn't big enough SMILEY Secondly the real spammers create a new character everyday to get around the ignores. Here is what i propose. Enhance the ignore feature. If you're putting someone on ignore it must be fore a really good reason else why bother? The way it should work is if you put Charcater A on ignore then it should flag ALL their characters as being on ignore. Heck all their characters on ALL the accounts on their current billing info SMILEY

See if I put cheating spammer #3 on ignore and later that evening I got to Valor to group and I can't hear the Monk that's in my group because I have his "spammer / scammer" toon on ignore I would think that's a good thing. Global ignore would really help you to know who the jerks are. No way to hide by cwitching toons then.

What do you think?

If the scammer is actually stupid enough to admit he is scamming, even if he simply admits "yeah, I am hoping to take advantage of stupid people", /report and /petition "so-and-so admitted that he puts regular plate molds costing 4pp up for 39kpp to catch suckers, please see the reported text".

I know it's "Buyer Beware!" and all that, but I have seen  where when someone was blatantly admitting to try to rip people off by misrepresenting one item as another, the trader was booted offline.  Maybe they weren't banned but I sure hope they got a warning, at least!

People who get their kicks by taking advantage of others make me :smileymad:

Someone tried to scam me recently with the ornate/plate bracer mold scam. Simple rule is inspect whatever is in the trade window. You have the power not to get caught, I toyed with him haggled on price while the trade window was open with my 40K in there for him to see.

I don't think palyer run casino's are a good idea since you have to rely on the person running it. Unless sony introduce some safe way for both parties to interact then I would steer clear.

I'll admit it I run a scam in the bazaar.  Just kidding- every now and then I will auction off my ignore list to the bazaar- for some sad reason there are no takers.  Oh well they seem to be less prevalant on my new home of Lans T'vyl.  Prexus had them really bad for a while.

Bah, forget the petition/report. Mob justice better then what the GMs could do lol. Tell your guild and all your friends that so-and-so is using the plate mold scam. Get the word out about this person. Get his name out and it will do more then a GM just booting him that one time. However, it really IS buyer beware out there. Be careful and inspect every item before you buy it. Check on everything before handing over that money. I would have believed that the people with enough plat to buy ornate and fungi's would know this game well enough to check on that... but I guess there are more and more people out there who never learned the game and was given their characters and money.

I cant believe people still fall for this old scam of Plate molds going for 40k etc.
How this can be classed as " misrepresentation" defies belief as there is a link available to items in bazaar.
My solution to this would be to ´ban both the person who sold the Mold for 40k AND ban the person who brought it for being so stupid.
If youve got that much pp to spend on something and you fall for such an obvious scami then you're either an idiot or someone who brought PP from scumbag (aka Yantis).

On Povar, most of the casinos I see run about 55/45 in favor of the operator.  I suspect those are honest, though I certainly wouldn't waste my time with them.  I can find easier and quicker ways to delete 55% of my plat.:smileyhappy:

There was one recent occurrence, however, which had the odds about 60/40 in favor of the gambler.  That is a pretty obvious scam.

So, if I was to make a suggestion to true newbies regarding the casinos, it would be to first figure out the odds the operator is really offering.  If it looks like you'll probably come out ahead, it's a scam.  If it looks like you'll come out behind, it might be on the up and up... but do you really want to come out behind?

The random one I deffinatly say is a scam, id be sure to mention what they where doing on /ooc but for the plate thing thats the buyers fault 100% thats like running into Best Buy buying a Microwave real fast cause you heard TV's where on sale this week, then taking it back cause the channels come in all fuzzy.

Duh go figure, take the lose and move on as there are no return policies in game, but the seller knows what they are doing and praying for some one to not pay attention.

That is a good idea. The only problem is the ignore list is filtered client-side, they would have to change it so that it would be filtered server-side to do it. Not a bad idea at all. I would like to see that happen, but I don't see it anytime soon.

I don't scam or anything, but I really wouldn't care if the person getting scammed bought their platinum on IGE or one of the other plat selling sites.  I'm thinking the people getting scammed haven't been playing long enough to know anything about the ornate quests.  If the ebayers are the ones getting scammed then good for them.   They're messing up the economy on Tunare beyond all recognition SMILEY

Another scam I have noticed is with jewelry....the trader puts up alot of the no-stat player made jewelry in the first slots, then they have the stat jewelry at the bottom of their trader bags, so people will do a search for the jewelry, go to the trader, and see the no-stat item WITH THE SAME NAME first ( sadly most never inspect the item to make sure it has the stats ).....personally, I wish that enchanted jewelry had a different name than the un-enchanted

I can believe it.  Most scams rely on the greed and dishonesty of the "mark" to operate.  That way if they get caught, they'll be less likely to go to the cops or tell other people about it.

Though I wish it could be done, flagging a whole account as ignored when you ignore one of them isn't likely to happen.

Regardless of the server/client issues, this would enable someone to detect the names of all your characters. They would have to make your own ignore list not viewable by you.

"Hm, I wonder if Helianthus has an alt?" /ignore Helianthus. View ignore list. Helianthus, Althaea, Oxalis, Begonia. "She never told me she had a paladin! She said she was going to bed! Shes playing the game without me!"

It would be nice to be able to know the names of a scammer's alts, sure. But who here would trade their own privacy for it? I've logged to alts to avoid stalker-like individuals in the past, I shudder to think they could have just kept following me around.

The latest scam on my server is some [Removed for Content] who puts up lots of merchant sold spells, for 500pp or more, when they sell for gold, to under 30pp each.

What makes his scam worse, is that one of the spells, Canni 2, used to be a quest spell, so WAS high priced. However, it is sold on the boat in abysmal sea, for 12pp. My was of dealing with this jerk, since i had an empty trader bag anyway, was to park an alt on the boat, and swap a bag of canni 2 spells thru shared bank to my trader. Price them a small bit above cost, then start actively auctioning that 1) I'm selling them for 25pp 2) I just bought them from a merchant for 12pp, and 3) they can be purchased on the boat in abysmal if 13pp markup is too much.

Oddly, since I started doing this, the scammer's supply has remained stable, he's sold NONE :smileysurprised:

Though I wish it could be done, flagging a whole account as ignored when you ignore one of them isn't likely to happen.

Regardless of the server/client issues, this would enable someone to detect the names of all your characters. They would have to make your own ignore list not viewable by you.

"Hm, I wonder if Helianthus has an alt?" /ignore Helianthus. View ignore list. Helianthus, Althaea, Oxalis, Begonia. "She never told me she had a paladin! She said she was going to bed! Shes playing the game without me!"

I agree that it isn't likely to happen, but not for the reason you advance. There's no question that the developers wouldn't do what you're talking about; if they ever implemented such a thing it would require server-side /ignore filtering. Then the situation you're talking about wouldn't happen, but I'm pretty sure that SoE sees this as too much work for too little gain.

It is a neat idea, though.

I love creative ways to deal with scammers.  Nicely done.

In a similar vein, there's a guy on Tunare who was trying to sell a Fungi...cept is was a regular ole fungi, not the one with fungal regrowth, for just under the price of a "real" fungi.

I saw that, I was wondering what the difference was but since I dont have 80k+ I did not look at the stats on it.

The casino spam in bazaar is pretty bad, at least one day the people were doing it in "say" instead of "ooc" or "shout" so it was only bad if you were near them.

I am totally against scamming, but I am very much into privacy.  If I don't want someone else knowing my alts...that's my business.

It would be nice to be able to know the names of a scammer's alts, sure. But who here would trade their own privacy for it? I've logged to alts to avoid stalker-like individuals in the past, I shudder to think they could have just kept following me around.

...So desolate were those places and so deep the horror that lay on them that some of the host were unmanned, and they could neither walk nor ride further north.
Aragorn looked at them, and there was pity in his eyes rather than wrath....
'Go!' said Aragorn. 'But keep what honour you may, and do not run! And there is a task which you may attempt and so be not wholly shamed. Take your way south-west til you come to Cair Andros, and if that is still held by enemies, as I think, then re-take it, if you can; and hold it to the last in defense of Gondor and Rohan!'
Then some being shamed by his mercy overcame their fear and went on, and the others took new hope, hearing of a manful deed within their measure that they could turn to, and they departed....
